Low-powered radio range beacons known as landing ranges (pre
viously known as on-call type ranges) are installed at certain inter
mediate landing fields for the purpose of facilitating landings at
those points under conditions of poor visibility. This type of range
is similar to the regular range beacon which marks the radio courses
along Federal airways, except that they are low powered and are for
use in locating landing fields rather than for denoting courses be
tween terminal points. Such stations operate upon request on 278
kilocycles, and are equipped to receive radiotelephone calls on 3,105
kilocycles and the air transport chain frequency. Replies from the
station are also made on 278 kilocycles.
